Citizenship is NOT a requirement unless so stated. All employees must provide work eligibility documents, as required by the Department of Homeland Security. Please refer to the Department of Homeland Security's I-9 Form for a list of acceptable documents.
If deemed acceptable to the hiring supervisor an applicant's name may be retained on an eligibility list for future consideration, should another position in that classification arise. Eligibility lists expire at the end of a one (1) year period, unless specifically extended.
EVIDENCE OF IDENTITY AND EMPLOYMENT ELIGIBILITY
In compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, the City requires all employees, to present original documents that will provide evidence of identity and employment eligibility.
EMPLOYMENT OF RELATIVES
The initial employment of relatives (by blood, marriage/domestic partner) of current City employees is not permitted within the same department unless pre-approved by the City Manager. Some Departments such as Police, do not allow relatives to work within the Department. No relative by blood or marriage shall be supervised by another relative. Additionally, relatives of the City Manager, Assistant City Manager, Human Resources Director, and all employees in their divisions may not work for the City. Relatives shall include spouse/domestic partner, child, parent, grandparent, brother, sister, grandchild, uncle, aunt, nephew, niece and first cousin.

Employees serve a probationary period ranging from six (6) months for non-safety employees to 18 months for safety employees. If work performance is not satisfactory, an employee may be terminated without cause and without recourse during the probationary period.

The City does not participate under the Social Security System. Employees are covered by the California Public Employees Retirement System. CalPERS membership is required for all employees.
