 Lunar Eclipse

 Presented by Dr. Stephenie Slahor

Join us on Wednesday, January 16th for the nature lecture The Lunar Eclipse with Dr. Stephenie Slahor. Learn more about lunar eclipses and some of the ancient and modern history associated with eclipses. Be prepared for the total lunar eclipse that will occur on Jan. 21, 2019. The lunar eclipse will be 100% visible from Palm Springs, CA (weather permitting). The lecture will begin at 6:30 p.m. in The Learning Center (TLC). This program is presented in partnership with the Desert Institute at Joshua Tree National Park.

A total lunar eclipse takes place when the Earth comes between the Sun and the Moon and covers the Moon with its shadow. When this happens, the Moon can turn red, earning it the nickname of Blood Moon. The lunar eclipse on Jan. 21, 2019 also is a supermoon. This means that the moon will be at perigee, or the point in its elliptical orbit at which it is closest to Earth

Dr. Stephenie Slahor is the author of the book Meteors and is a Palm Springs resident and university professor whose hobbies include kayaking and rock hounding. She is a member of the Shadow Mountain Gem and Mineral Society of Palm Springs.
