All Ashore - The Glory Days of Transatlantic Travel by Ship
Presented by the Palm Springs Genealogical Society with guest speaker Vinny Stoppia followed by round-table sharing. This FREE program will be from 10:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in The Learning Center.
Vinny Stoppia, a native from the Big Apple, thrived and survived through sixteen years of parochial education. He worked for twenty-three years at United Nations Headquarters observing the political luminaries of the Cold War Era. Vinny moved to Palm Springs in 1993, recognizing a slice of Heaven when he saw it.
For more than fifty years, Vinny gobbled up anything about eighteenth century France, in particular, the singular Queen of France, Marie Antoinette. His engaging narrative about the life of this lighting rod monarch, “The Austrian Woman,” is the culmination of a lifelong passion to retell her story from a fresh perspective.
But Vinny’s contagious enthusiasm spills over to other subjects. Let’s start with art. Vinny has been a volunteer docent at the Palm Springs Art Museum for eighteen years where he has led countless tours and served as a gallery specialist. In addition, Vinny revels as a volunteer tour guide for the Palm Springs Historical Society, sharing his knowledge and affection about Palm Springs. And just as importantly, Vinny has been hooked since the age of seven on the glory years of sea travel, whether sailing as a stylish first-class passenger or a hopeful immigrant in spartanly cramped spaces.
Vinny has presented power-points at local organizations, as well as teaching classes at OLLI @ CSUSB on his favorite interests: history, art, and trans-Atlantic travel.
