Lecture: Pollinators @ Mizell

The Importance of Pollinators

presented by Jack Fitzsimmons of The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation, in partnership with the Oswit Land Trust

Pollinators are essential to our environment and provide ecological services that are necessary for the reproduction of over 85% of the world’s flowering plants, including more than two-thirds of the world’s crop species. Beyond agriculture, pollinators are keystone species in most terrestrial ecosystems. Fruits and seeds derived from insect pollination are a major part of the diet of approximately 25% of all birds, and of mammals ranging from red-backed voles to grizzly bears. Come learn about how you can create pollinator habitats for our unique Coachella Valley environment. Jack Fitzsimmons, a local ambassador for the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation, will present a dynamic program which includes useful handout materials for anyone interested in this topic.

Jack Fitzsimmons is a lifelong gardener and self-confessed science geek. A childhood misadventure with a wasp’s nest led him to investigate what insects do other than cause pain. He is a graduate of the UCR’s Climate Steward Program and the Pollinator Steward Certification program through the Pollinator Partnership. This afternoon, he is representing The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation, an international nonprofit that protects insects and other invertebrates, and their habitats, through science-based conservation, advocacy, and public education, focusing on pollinators.

The program will be from 3:00 – 4:30 p.m. at Mizell Center.

Assisted Listening Devices (ALDs) are instruments designed to amplify sounds to make it easier for persons who are hearing‑impaired to enjoy a library program.

Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service for effective communication, or a modification of policies or procedures to participate in a program, service, or activity of the City of Palm Springs, should contact the ADA Coordinator, as soon as possible but no later than 48 hours before the scheduled event.
