COVID 19 Update

In light of the COVID-19 situation, the City of Palm Springs is taking precautions to keep employees healthy and help prevent illness in our workplace and the community. We are monitoring the impacts of the situation and will adjust accordingly. If changes are made, we will post notifications on our web page and via social media.

Below are some brief updates on sustainability-related services and activities:

  • Curbside trash and recycling will continue to be picked up as usual. Please remember - facial tissues, paper towels and disinfecting wipes are not recyclable. Please put them in the trash.
  • Palm Springs Disposal announced Customer Relief Packages for residents who have lost employment as a result of COVID-19 measures and for eligible businesses. Contact PSDS for details 760-327-1351.
  • Recycling centers such as Palm Springs Recycling have been closed.
  • Desert Water Agency has announced that there will be no water shutoffs or late fees, and processing fees will be absorbed by DWA between March 17 and May 16. Residents that are affected by the COVID-19 epidemic can get help through Help2Others!. More information on the DWA website
  • The Riverside County Household Hazardous Waste Dropoff facility that operates at 1100 Vella Road on Saturday mornings will be closed through April. Please continue to safely store your materials until it reopens.
  • The Sustainability Film Series movie, A Vetter World, scheduled for March 26th has been canceled.
  • The Saturday April 18th Shredding, E-waste Recycling, and Bulky Item dropoff at City Hall is canceled.
  • Although the CDC indicates that surface contact is not a primary means of transmission, please wash or sanitize your reusable shopping bags after each use to help reduce the potential for spreading the Coronavirus. Most stores are requiring you to bag your groceries yourself if you bring your own. Always wash your other reusable food containers after each use. Use disposable items if you feel more comfortable, but please be sure to recycle or dispose of these items appropriately. More info on our Single-use Plastics page.
  • Please maintain proper social distances if you go out for a walk, hike, or bike ride. Some of our trails are narrow, so please exercise caution when moving around other hikers and walkers. Explore the "urban trails" instead - many of our downtown/neighborhood sidewalks and roads are wide and have plenty of space for people to move! Masks/facial covers must be worn at all times and parking at trailheads is PROHIBITED. You must walk to the trails to help reduce congestion.

The City of Palm Springs has a variety of sustainability and recycling programs. Click the topics on the left for more information on each. Be sure to check out our Events Calendar also!   Below is the latest news on program activities.

The City of Palm Springs with support from CalRecycle has ea stablished a battery recycling program  that allows residents and visitors to drop off their used batteries and small electronics at one of seven convenient locations throughout the city.

This program fills an important gap in public and private recycling programs. Batteries that are in many common electronic devices such as watches, hearing aids, clocks, computer peripherals, and cameras are considered household hazardous waste and must not be placed in trash or in recycling containers. Please click on the Battery Recycling Program link to the left for more details about the program.
