The City of Palm Springs Historic Site Preservation Board (HSPB) is pleased to announce it will present its 9th annual PRESERVATION MATTERS Symposium, A Mirage Becomes an Oasis: Water and Tourism History in Greater Palm Springs, April 29 - 30, 2023 at the Palm Springs Convention Center. The free two-day public event engages a wide range of scholars and experts presenting topics that discuss the role of water and tourism shaping the history, development, and built environment of Greater Palm Springs.
The Symposium will begin with a welcome from Mayor Grace Garner and include a panel discussion on the economics of architectural and cultural tourism moderated by Mayor pro tem Jeffrey Bernstein.
Those who attend the symposium will be able to attend one of several special tours highlighting significant historic sites throughout the city. In addition, individuals who have made significant contributions to local historic preservation efforts will be recognized.
The event will also include architectural models on display designed by students from St. Theresa School, Palm Springs High School, and College of the Desert. Many local preservation organizations will also have tables to provide information on their organizations and activities. The symposium culminates with a closing reception at the Convention Center.
“The City of Palm Springs is recognized as an international destination for exceptional architecture and design, said Mayor Grace Garner. “As a community committed to preserving the unique character of Palm Springs, we are proud to present this preservation event and recognize the important work of our Historic Preservation Board.
