The City of Palm Springs is aware of the recent quo warranto application filed by the Riverside County District Attorney on Oct. 2, 2024, seeking the California Attorney General’s approval to pursue legal action regarding Councilmember Christy Holstege’s residency. These allegations claim that Councilmember Holstege does not reside within her district, which Councilmember Holstege has firmly denied and intends to contest, as is her legal right.
The City of Palm Springs takes these allegations seriously and shares the community’s desire for clarity. Over the past month, the City has requested evidence from the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office to understand the basis of these claims. Despite repeated requests, the DA’s Office did not provide the requested evidence and instead asked the City to conduct its own investigation. The City determined that conducting a separate, duplicative investigation was not appropriate, given that the DA’s Office had already completed its own inquiry. The City maintained, since August, that it was the responsibility of the District Attorney to present the evidence, either to the City or the Attorney General.
Now that the Riverside County District Attorney has filed a quo warranto application with the California Attorney General, it is the Attorney General who now holds the authority on whether the case can proceed,
City’s Position and Legal Process
The City of Palm Springs acknowledges the allegations and action taken by the Riverside County District Attorney. However, we must emphasize that the City is bound by legal protocols that provide the Attorney General with the authority to decide any future steps. The issue is now under the jurisdiction of the California Attorney General, and it is essential that the City respects this process and awaits their determination before considering further action. The City is committed to upholding the law and ensuring a fair process for all involved.
Next Steps
The City of Palm Springs is awaiting the decision from the California Attorney General regarding the quo warranto application. Until a determination is made, the City will refrain from taking further action or making decisions on this matter until it is appropriate to respond.
