In solemn remembrance of Harold Matzner, a towering figure in Palm Springs' history, Mayor Ron deHarte has ordered all flags at city buildings and properties to be flown at half-staff for seven days. This tribute honors Matzner's profound impact as a visionary entrepreneur and transformative philanthropist who reshaped the city's cultural and economic landscape.
Matzner, who passed away at age 88, was a tireless champion of the community. His legacy includes revitalizing the Palm Springs International Film Festival and the McCallum Theatre, leading the charge on the downtown revitalization through Measure J, and donating over $70 million to local non-profits. He was also the owner of the beloved Spencer's Restaurant.
The mayor's order reflects the city's deep gratitude for Matzner's unwavering commitment to making Palm Springs a better place for everyone. His life exemplified the power of combining business success with genuine civic responsibility.
