CITIZENSHIP
Citizenship is NOT a requirement unless so stated. All employees must provide work eligibility documents, as required by the Department of Homeland Security. Please refer to the Department of Homeland Security's I-9 Form for a list of acceptable documents.

DEFERRED COMPENSATION PLAN
Available for interested employees.

DRUG FREE WORKPLACE
In compliance with the DRUG FREE WORKPLACE ACT OF 1988 it is City policy to maintain a drug free workplace; this includes marijuana, which is illegal under Federal law.

ELIGIBILITY LIST
If deemed acceptable to the hiring supervisor an applicant's name may be retained on an eligibility list for future consideration, should another position in that classification arise.  Eligibility lists expire at the end of a one (1) year period, unless specifically extended.

EMPLOYEE LEAVE
Number of hours per month depends on the length of service and employee's bargaining unit.

EVIDENCE OF IDENTITY AND EMPLOYMENT ELIGIBILITY
In compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, the City requires all employees, to present original documents that will provide evidence of identity and employment eligibility.

EMPLOYMENT EXPENSES
Applicants are responsible for any personal expenses incurred during the selection and hiring process.

EMPLOYMENT OF RELATIVES
The initial employment of relatives (by blood, marriage/domestic partner) of current City employees is not permitted within the same department unless pre-approved by the City Manager. Some Departments such as Police, do not allow relatives to work within the Department. No relative by blood or marriage shall be supervised by another relative. Additionally, relatives of the City Manager, Assistant City Manager, Human Resources Director, and all employees in their divisions may not work for the City. Relatives shall include spouse/domestic partner, child, parent, grandparent, brother, sister, grandchild, uncle, aunt, nephew, niece and first cousin.

FINGERPRINTING
Applicants who are hired will be fingerprinted during the background processing period. All fingerprints are verified by the Department of Homeland Security.

INSURANCE
Medical, dental and vision coverage is available to employees and eligible dependents. Employees may also be eligible to participate in life and disability insurance plans.

LOYALTY OATH
All City employees are required to sign a loyalty oath.

MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
A medical examination, including testing for illegal drugs such as marijuana, which is illegal under Federal law, may be required prior to hire.  Failure to pass the medical examination may be cause for rejection or removal from the eligibility list.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD
Employees serve a probationary period ranging from six (6) months for non-safety employees to 18 months for safety employees. If work performance is not satisfactory, an employee may be terminated without cause and without recourse during the probationary period.

RECRUITMENT POLICY
The City of Palm Springs only accepts applications for current opportunities as listed. For a listing of current job opportunities, CLICK HERE. The City does not maintain a list nor does it accept applications for "future" openings.  However, you may submit a job interest card to be notified of future openings.

RESIDENCY
Residency is NOT a requirement of City employment; however, for some positions there may be a distance requirement.

RETIREMENT
The City does not participate under the Social Security System. Employees are covered by the California Public Employees Retirement System. CalPERS membership is required for all employees.
