Citizens' Complaint Information
WHAT IF I WANT TO MAKE A COMPLAINT?
Fill out the online Complaint Form and or come to the Palm Springs Department to fill out a hard copy report or to speak with the on-duty Watch Commander about your incident.
WHO SHOULD I GO TO FIRST?
The employee’s supervisor handles the first step in the complaint process. Ask to see the on-duty Watch Commander to get the process started.
WHO WILL INVESTIGATE MY COMPLAINT?
Either a special investigator assigned by the Chief of Police, or the employee’s supervisor will investigate your complaint.
DO I HAVE TO COMPLAIN IN PERSON?
No. We would prefer to talk to you in person as we have found that this is the best way to exchange information accurately, but we will accept a complaint by phone or letter if necessary.
CAN I MAKE A COMPLAINT IF I’M UNDER 18?
Yes. Bring one of your parents, guardians, or a responsible adult with you.
WILL THE CHIEF OF POLICE KNOW THAT I’VE MADE A COMPLAINT?
Yes. The Chief of Police receives copies of, and responds to all complaints. The employee’s supervisor will be notified as well.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THE EMPLOYEE?
That depends upon what the employee did. If the employee’s actions are found to be criminal, he/she will be dealt with like any other citizen. If the actions were improper but not criminal, the employee will be disciplined by the Chief of Police. If the investigation supports the conclusion that the employee’s actions were legal and within Department guidelines, he/she will be exonerated. Should the investigation indicate that a complaint is false, the complaint will be unfounded.
WILL I BE NOTIFIED WHEN THE INVESTIGATION IS COMPLETED?
Yes. At the conclusion of the investigation the Chief of Police will notify you within 30 days of the investigation's findings.
