Most burglars sell what they steal. Without serial numbers it is very difficult for investigators to trace, identify, or recover stolen goods. Unless you can positively identify your stolen goods, the police may not be able to return them to you. To help protect your personal property, join the Operation Identification Program.
- Check out an electric engraver from the Palm Springs Community Policing Office (760-778-8421). Engrave your driver's license number and two-letter state abbreviation on all your valuables. Engrave televisions, radios, stereos, computers, golf clubs, bicycles, appliances, tools and any portable goods that might be stolen.
- When you check out an engraver, you will receive an "Inventory Record" sheet that you can use to list the serial numbers of your property. You should put the inventory list in a safe place with a copy someplace other than your home. If you are burglarized, the list can help you when you report the crime to the Palm Springs Police and your insurance company.
- Once you have joined the Operation Identification Program, you will receive a special window decal, warning burglars that you are an Operation ID participant.
