Environmentally Preferable Purchasing Policy - LINK
The City’s Environmentally Preferable Purchasing Policy, or EPPP, was formally adopted in 2023. This policy collects all current requirements and recommendations for making our purchases more environmentally friendly. In the context of this policy, environmentally friendly means:
- Minimizing health risks to City staff and residents by purchasing and using fewer toxic chemicals
- Minimizing the City’s contribution to global climate change by making low-carbon choices
- Improving indoor and outdoor air quality by implementing practices that reduce the generation of harmful pollution
-
Protecting ground and surface waters by reducing pollution and water use
-
Minimizing the City’s consumption of resources by purchasing long-lasting, durable products, purchasing and using recyclable products, and/or by purchasing products with recycled content
-
Complying with relevant state requirements
We will update the policy as new regulations are passed or more environmentally friendly products become available.
Currently, EPPP covers:
-
Recycled content in supplies where available – i.e. paper, plastic, etc.
-
Avoiding certain chemicals in pesticides, paints, treated wood, refrigerants, flame retardants, cleaning products, and other products
-
Purchasing electric vehicles for City fleets and renewable power to run City operations
-
Avoiding polystyrene foam in foodware and transitioning to reusable alternatives
-
Reuse of products and packaging
-
Landscaping and recovered organic waste products
-
Apparel and textiles
