The City of Palm Springs' Sustainable Business Scholarship Program provides up to $750 to local licensed businesses to meet environmental and sustainability requirements or adopt voluntary initiatives to reduce their environmental footprint here in Palm Springs. Click on the topics below for details. Download the Program Fact Sheet. Spanish Version.

On June 24, 2021, the City of Palm Springs City Council approved a Food Ware Ordinance, which will go into effect on January 1, 2022.  As a result of this Ordinance, the "new" Scholarship Program is aimed at assisting “Prepared Food Vendors” that range from coffee shops and food-vending convenience stores, to restaurants and bars. The scholarship funds can be used for procurement of products for compliance to the Food Ware Ordinance.

  • Reusable food service ware (plates, glassware, cups, trays, baskets, cutlery, linens)
  • Equipment to wash and sanitize reusable food service ware and/or linens
  • Purchase of approved disposable food ware for takeout and delivery to avoid use of polystyrene
  • Bulk dispensers for condiments
  • Participation in Reusable Food Service Ware Pilot Program when operational (Reusable food service ware which is delivered to your restaurant for takeout/delivery orders, collected, washed and returned for reuse.)

The Scholarship is also available to landscapers and gardeners in support of the City's Leaf Blower Ordinance.

Purchases to Promote Compliance with Gasoline-powered Leaf Blower Ban

  • Purchase of replacement batteries for electric leaf blowers
  • Purchase of an electric leaf blower
  • Payment of business license fees to the City of Palm Springs

Businesses must seek pre-approval before submitting reimbursement paperwork as noted in the program fact sheet. Some project requests may be presented to the Sustainability Commission at their monthly meeting for review and approval. Funds received may be considered taxable income.

This new program is available until funds are expended.

What Businesses are Eligible?

Licensed businesses authorized to do work in Palm Springs and that are in good standing with the City (e.g., no outstanding fines) are eligible. Businesses that are not in compliance with current requirements such as recycling and organics management requirements may receive funding if they use funds to achieve compliance.

For those businesses that are based outside of Palm Springs but are licensed to do work in Palm Springs, funds may only be used to make your Palm Springs presence more sustainable. For example, we will reimburse a gardener for an electric leaf blower they use in Palm Springs, but we would not issue funds to a business that wants to make lighting upgrades to their headquarters office located in another City.
