The Palm Springs Regional Permanent Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Facility is located at 1100 Vella Road, Palm Springs, CA 92264. The facility is operated by Riverside County in conjunction with Palm Springs Disposal Services and is open on Saturdays only, excluding holiday weekends.

Residents may bring up to 125 pounds (or 15 gallons) of chemical waste per trip. Individual containers should be no more than 5 gallons (or 50 pounds). Residents may also bring used syringes in a SHARPS container, or other plastic container, for disposal. 

Please note the Permanent HHW Collection Facility is a drive-through facility and the technicians will handle everything for you. Please follow these drop-off procedures for the smoothest experience:

1. Residents must remain in their vehicles at all times. Please wear a face covering if you are feeling unwell, while at the facility.
2. Drop-off items must be away from the passenger space, either in the trunk or bed of your vehicle. Staff will not open vehicle doors and/or enter the vehicle cabin to retrieve waste.
   1. For vehicles with integrated trunk space such as Jeeps, Vans, and SUVs, please place items in the designated cargo space where a Facility technician may access it without the need to open passenger doors.
   2. For vehicles without an automatic trunk mechanism, residents are asked to unlock the trunk as they arrive to the Facility or may provide a key to the Facility technician so they may open the trunk. Residents must remain in their vehicle at all times.

Electronic waste (eWaste) such as computers, laptops, small appliances, and other items with a cord may be dropped off at the following locations:

• Palm Springs Disposal Services provides a drop-off bin behind their offices at the corner of Williams Street and E Mesquite Ave. The bins are available Monday through Friday, 8:00am-3:00pm.
• The Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Facility is operated by Riverside County and Palm Springs Disposal Services and is located at 1100 Vella Road, Palm Springs, CA 92264. The facility is open on Saturday mornings only. Please refer to the HHW information elsewhere on this page for more details.
• Periodic City eWaste Collection Events are hosted by the Department of Sustainability and generally occur in January, April and October. Please check the web page for more details on the next event.

Ponce Recycling Center (619.587.9876) is located behind Ralph's Grocery Storage in Smoke Tree Village, near the intersection of S Sunrise Way and E Palm Canyon Dr.

The Recycling Center accepts drop-offs of cash return value (CRV) bottles and cans, and other recyclable materials. Their hours of operation are Monday-Saturday, 9:00am-5:00pm. 

All cardboard boxes should have tape removed and be broken down flat prior to being placed in recycling bins. Please be sure to break boxes down to save on space. Most cardboard will fit in your curbside recycling bin or larger recycling dumpsters in multi-family/HOA complexes when effectively flattened. 

For large cardboard, or if your home/complex recycling bins are full, please bring cardboard to Palm Springs Disposal Services (PSDS) at the corner of Williams Rd and E Mesquite Ave during regular business hours. PSDS provides a dropoff bin for cardboard at the Williams Rd entrance. Please make sure all loose tape is removed and boxes are broken down flat.

Home Generated Sharps Disposal 

In recent years, the city has provided residents with free mail-back sharps disposal containers through a state stewardship program. The operator of the program terminated its statewide operations earlier this year, impacting our local program. The Sustainability Department is currently exploring alternative options for assisting residents directly with safe sharps disposal. 

Mail back services are available upon request through the MED-Project, an approved sharps take-back program. You can find the request form here or call 1 (844) MED-PROJECT or 1 (844) 633-7765 or (TTY: 711).

California state law prohibits the disposal of home generated sharps into trash or recycling bins. The law requires that all sharps waste be transported to a collection center in a container approved by the local enforcement agency. 

Tips for Home Made Disposal Containers: 

• Use a 1-gallon in size or smaller hard plastic containers such as a laundry detergent bottle with a secure lid.
• Place a label on both sides of the container that identifies “Biohazard”.
  • Free biohazard labels available for printing through the Riverside Count Department of Waste Resources.
  • Preprinted labels are available at HHW collection facilities and events or by calling (951) 486-3200. 
• When the container is full, secure the lid and tape the container closed.

FULL sharps containers may be dropped off at the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility, located at 1100 Vella Road in Palm Springs. Please visit their website for hours of operation. 

There are two sharps disposal kiosk locations in Riverside County for residential disposal only: 

• Beaumont - Hemet Area Lamb Canyon Landfill - 16411 Lamb Canyon Road, Beaumont, 92223 Open: Monday - Saturday, 6:00 AM - 4:30 PM
• Riverside - Moreno Valley Area Badlands Landfill - 31125 Ironwood Avenue, Moreno Valley, 92555 Open: Monday - Saturday, 6:00 AM - 4:30 PM 

**DO NOT DROP OFF FULL CONTAINERS AT THE FIRE STATIONS.**

Medication Disposal

We are unable to accept any unused medications. Medication bags with pre-paid labels are available at Palm Springs City Hall at the Reception Desk upon request. 

**We CANNOT accept controlled substances.**

The City of Palm Springs operates a recycling program for used batteries. These items are not accepted in the curbside recycling or trash collections.

Please bring used batteries to any of City sponsored drop-off locations throughout Palm Springs. For more information and to see drop-off locations, please visit the Battery Recycling Program website. Batteries may also be taken to the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility, located at 1100 Vella Road. Please visit their website for hours of operation. 

Larger batteries, such as car batteries, should only be taken to the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility.

If you have an old mattress you no longer need, you may arrange a bulky item pickup at your home through Palm Springs Disposal Services (PSDS). Please visit their Bulky Item Pick-up website for more details.

You may also bring your used mattress to PSDS' Edom Hill Transfer Station. Please visit their website for hours of operation and location.

There are a variety of car donation services who will provide a donation credit for a used vehicle. These types of services often reclaim valuable parts for reuse or repair vehicles for use by those in need.

The City of Palm Springs does not endorse any particular service. Residents should research current options available in the Coachella Valley for the best option to fit their needs.
