COVID-19 Information

In light of the COVID-19 situation, the City of Palm Springs is taking precautions to keep employees healthy and help prevent illness in our workplace and across the community. We are monitoring the impacts of the situation and will adjust accordingly. If changes are made, we will post notifications on our web page and via social media.

Below are some brief updates on sustainability-related services and activities impacted by the COVID-19 response:

  • Please remember - facial tissues, paper towels and disinfecting wipes are not recyclable. Please put them in the trash.
  • Curbside trash and recycling will continue to be picked up as usual.
  • The Riverside County Household Hazardous Waste Dropoff facility that operates at 1100 Vella Road on Saturday mornings is open with Winter hours 9 AM - 2 PM. See our web page for more information. The following new rules apply:
    • People must remain in their vehicles and wear a face covering.
    • Waste should be separate from the passenger space like in a trunk or the bed of an SUV or station wagon. Staff will not open vehicle doors to retrieve waste.
  • The City began enforcing its ban on single-use plastic bags in August following a similar action at the State level. Customers will be able to use recycled paper bags, buy reusable bags from the store, or bag their own groceries using reusable bags consistent with safety protocols. Single-use plastics website for more details.
  • DO NOT flush "flushable" wipes, sanitizing wipes, facial tissues, paper towels, and other trash. Check out DWA's website for more information on what not to put down your toilets and drains.
Recent Program Updates

City Council New Recycling and Organics Management Ordinance Implementing SB 1383

On December 9th, the Palm Springs City Council passed a new recycling and organic waste management ordinance that implements the requirements for SB 1383. This new law requires that all residents receive organic waste management services along with trash and recycling. It also requires all businesses that produce more than a de minimis quantity of trash and organic waste to also subscribe to service. Please check out our webpage for more details on residential organic waste service.  You can also view the updated page for commercial organic waste and recycling services.

Food Ware Ordinance Takes Effect January 1, 2022

On July 8, 2021, City Council passed a new food ware ordinance that will restrict the types of food ware that food vendors will be able to provide. The City has held workshops and provides incentives to businesses to help them comply. As residents, here's how you can support this transition:

  1. Say no to utensils and condiments you don't want or need when ordering food to go. Restaurants should now only provide these to you when you want them.
  2. Carry reusable straws and utensils with you to avoid using disposables.
  3. Bring reusable bags with you when you think you might have leftovers or when you are ordering to go items from restaurants. This will help reduce their need to supply you with a bag for your short trip home.
  4. Give back unwanted straws that are provided to you without your request and remind your server that straws and stirrers are only on demand.
  5. Don't buy or use polystyrene food containers in Palm Springs. Report vendors that are still using these things through the MyPalmSprings App.

More information about the food ware ordinance and program are available by clicking here.

Pedestrian Safety and Safe Routes to School Master Plan

The City is finalizing a new Pedestrian Safety Plan. It has convened several public meetings and developed an on-line tool to identify issues and potential project opportunities. The City will hold its final public meetings in December and the findings will be provided to the City for use in future funding requests.
