The Palm Springs Regional Permanent Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility will accept household hazardous waste from residents at the facility located at 1100 Vella Road. The facility is operated by Riverside County. It is open on Saturdays, regular hours (October - May) 9:00 am to 2:00 pm and summer hours (June – September) 7:00 am to noon. It is closed on holiday weekends.

Bring your used syringes in SHARPS containers or other plastic containers for disposal.

Residents can bring up to 125 pounds or 15 gallons of chemical waste per trip. Individual containers should be no more than 5 gallons or 50 pounds. Items include: household cleaners, syringes, oil- or water-based paints, chemicals, motor oil and filters, electronics, Mercury products and batteries. Until further notice, residents must follow the following drop-off procedures:

1) Residents must remain in their vehicles at all times and wear face coverings while at the facility.
2) Waste must be away from the passenger space (in the trunk or bed of your vehicle). Staff will not open vehicle door and enter vehicle cabin to retrieve waste.

For vehicles with integrated trunk space such as Jeeps, Vans, and SUVs, it is fine as long as the waste is in the designated cargo space where a contractor can access it without the need to open passenger doors. 

For a vehicle that does not have an auto trunk mechanism, residents either need to unlock the trunk right before they get to the facility or they can provide a key to the contractor so they can open the trunk. Residents need to remain in the vehicle at all times.

Electronic waste such as computers, laptops, small appliances, and other things with a cord can be dropped off at the following locations:

Palm Springs Disposal Services has a drop-off bin behind their offices at the corner of Williams Street and Mesquite. The bins are available Monday through Friday 8:00am-3:00pm. 

Household Hazardous Waste Facility operated by Riverside County located at 1100 Vella Road. This facility is only open on Saturday mornings. Please see the HHW listing elsewhere on this site for more details.

Ponce Recycling Center (619-587-9876) behind Ralph's at Smoketree near the intersection of Sunrise Way and East Palm Canyon is a new recycling center that will pay you for your CRV bottles and cans and other recyclable materials. It is open Mon-Sat 9-5. 

Most cardboard will fit in your curbside bin or the dumpsters in multi-family complexes. Please be sure to break boxes down to save on space. 

 For large cardboard or if your recycling bins are full, please bring cardboard to Palm Springs Disposal Services at the corner of Mesquite and Williams Street during regular business hours. They have a dropoff bin for cardboard at the Williams Street entrance. Please make sure that loose tape is removed and boxes are broken down.

What do I do with unused medications?

Medication bags with pre-paid labels are available at the reception desk at city hall. We will not accept any medications.   

**We CANNOT accept controlled substances.**

The City of Palm Springs offers free sharps containers for residents to use when storing needles and other items.

They can be picked up at the reception desk at City Hall.

FULL sharps containers can ONLY be dropped off at the Household Hazardous Waste facility, located at 1100 Vella Road in Palm Springs between 9am and 12pm.

**DO NOT DROP OFF FULL CONTAINERS AT THE FIRE STATIONS.**

The City of Palm Springs operates a recycling program for batteries. These items are not accepted in the curbside recycling or trash collections. Take your used batteries to any one of eight locations throughout the City. For more information, check out the Battery Recycling Program website. Batteries can also be taken to the Riverside County Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off Center located at 1100 Vella Road on Saturday mornings if City facilities are closed.

Larger batteries such as car batteries should only be taken to the Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off center.

If you have an old mattress you no longer need. You can arrange for a bulk item curbside pickup with PSDS or take your mattress to Burrtec's Edom Hill Transfer Station at 70100 Edom Hill Road in Cathedral City, CA 92234. 

There are a variety of car donation services that will provide you with donation credit for your used car. They either recycle the parts or repair vehicles for use by those in need. The City does not necessarily endorse any particular service. Consumers should research the options available in this area.
